A primeira &eacute; quando come&ccedil;amos a praticar cedo demais\u2014em geral incentivados por amigos zelosos.  Estes praticantes n&atilde;o conseguem, n&atilde;o querem permanecer sentados e im&oacute;veis; em pouco tempo a maioria deixar&aacute; de meditar.  Acontece retomarem a pr&aacute;tica quando os amenos ensinamentos da vida imp&otilde;em constata&ccedil;&otilde;es mais realistas.  Contudo, por mais relutantes que possam estar, se concordam em permanecer sentados, im&oacute;veis, por pelo menos cinco minutos a cada dia, poder&atilde;o constatar progressos interessantes  (aqueles que acorrem para &quot;ajudar&quot; o pr&oacute;ximo precisam ter sensibilidade para a sua capacidade de receber).<\/p>\n<p>O segundo tipo de &quot;resistentes&quot; s&atilde;o aqueles que t&ecirc;m uma pr&aacute;tica consistente.  Acontece que, ap&oacute;s meses ou anos de meditar sem qualquer resist&ecirc;ncia, ficam agitados e aborrecidos.  Podem mesmo deixar de meditar (claro que por in&uacute;meros motivos).  A maioria continuar&aacute; a meditar, ainda que considerando um empreendimento ingrato e uma perda de tempo.   Outros v&atilde;o continuar meditando esporadicamente durante anos antes de conseguir consolidar a pr&aacute;tica.<\/p>\n<p>Ent&atilde;o, porque surge a resist&ecirc;ncia quando a pr&aacute;tica provou frut&iacute;fera?  Por um motivo:  o ego, ou pequeno self (ou uma &oacute;tica existencial centrada sobre si mesmo com os conceitos atendentes, opini&otilde;es, julgamentos e analises) come&ccedil;a a se dar conta de que o zazen (medita&ccedil;&atilde;o) apresenta uma real amea&ccedil;a e at&eacute; uma aniquila&ccedil;&atilde;o.  &Eacute; claro que o ego revida\u2014aparentando ser resist&ecirc;ncia.  Compreendendo isto, compreenderemos que os per&iacute;odos de resist&ecirc;ncia s&atilde;o o pren&uacute;ncio de novos n&iacute;veis de crescimento, como se retir&aacute;ssemos mais uma casca da cebola.<\/p>\n<p>Tamb&eacute;m, associadas &agrave; resist&ecirc;ncia cl&aacute;ssica, est&atilde;o as queixas do disc&iacute;pulo que lastima, &quot;j&aacute; n&atilde;o tem gra&ccedil;a&quot;.  Ou &quot;deixou de ser divertido e m&aacute;gico&quot;.  Ou &quot;n&atilde;o tenho retorno e n&atilde;o passa de um trabalho estafante!&quot;  Portanto, &eacute; aqui mesmo que estaria come&ccedil;ando a pr&aacute;tica porque o ego pode observar a sua constante busca de prazer e gratifica&ccedil;&atilde;o.  Uma oportunidade de ouro para o disc&iacute;pulo, se ele souber reconhecer.<\/p>\n<p>Como a pr&aacute;tica diz respeito a tudo o que toque nossas vidas, quando reconhecemos e lidamos com a resist&ecirc;ncia na almofada estaremos mais conscientes da agita&ccedil;&atilde;o, das evas&otilde;es e manobras e sutis que tumultuam todas as nossas a&ccedil;&otilde;es.  Como sempre, o que se passa na almofada vai tamb&eacute;m se passar onde quer que estejamos.  A plena consci&ecirc;ncia e a pr&aacute;tica em lidar com a resist&ecirc;ncia enquanto meditamos sentados vai iluminar as sombras correspondentes na nossa atividade e relacionamentos.<\/p>\n<p>&Eacute; claro que para o disc&iacute;pulo todas as formas de resist&ecirc;ncia s&atilde;o poderosos mestres. Natural and normal. <\/p>\n<p>There are two types of resistance to an ongoing practice of awareness. The first is that of people introduced to practice too soon (usually by over-zealous friends). They can&#8217;t or won&#8217;t sit still; and most of them will stop sitting in a short while &#8212; sometimes they return after a few more sobering bouts with life&#8217;s gentle teachings. However, unwilling as they may be, if they will agree to sit still for even five minutes a day, interesting developments can occur. (As an aside, those of us who rush to &#8216;help&#8217; others need to develop sensitivity to what another person is ready to receive.)<\/p>\n<p>The second class of &#8216;resisters&#8217; contains those of us who have a persistent sitting practice. Sometimes after months or years of fairly easy sitting, we find ourselves bored and restless. We may even stop sitting (having, of course, lots of good reasons). Most of us will just continue to sit, feeling the whole enterprise is a dreary waste of time but sticking with it anyway. Some may engage in stop-and-start sitting for a few years before settling down.<\/p>\n<p>So why does resistance come up when practice has been noticeably fruitful? It comes up for one primary reason: the ego or little self (or personally-centered view of life with all of its attendant concepts, opinions, judgments, and analyses) begins to sense that zazen (sitting) puts it under severe attack, may even threaten to annihilate it. So of course the ego fights back &#8212; and it feels to us like resistance. If we can understand this, we also understand that periods of resistance &#8212; if we will persist &#8212; are the harbingers of a new level of growth, another layer soon to be peeled from the onion. <\/p>\n<p>Somewhat related to classical resistance are the complaints of the student who moans, &#8216;It&#8217;s not fun anymore.&#8217; Or &#8216;It&#8217;s not exciting or magical.&#8217; Or &#8216;I&#8217;m not getting anything out of this, and it&#8217;s just hard work!&#8217; At this fine point, practice might begin. At least the ego has an opportunity to observe its ceaseless search for pleasure and gratification. A golden opportunity for the student (if taken). <\/p>\n<p>Since our practice is with everything in our lives, if we recognize and deal with resistance on the cushion, we will also be more aware of the subtle evasions and maneuvers, and busyness often invading our activities. As always, what we do in sitting, we do everywhere. Awareness and practice with resistance during sitting will illuminate the corresponding shadows in work and relationships.<\/p>\n<p>It is obvious that for the student all forms of resistance are powerful teachers.
